Lewy body dementia (LBD) is a common type of dementia that affects memory and muscle development. It is caused by the buildup of abnormal proteins, called Lewy bodies, in the brain. Symptoms of LBD include hallucinations, confusion, cognitive impairment, and sluggish movement, which can interfere with daily activities. While there is no cure for LBD, medications and therapy are available to help with ongoing symptoms.

A 2023 study conducted by the Mayo Clinic suggests that patients with LBD often exhibit symptoms years before the disease is diagnosed, particularly during sleep. The study found a strong correlation between REM sleep disorder and LBD, with as many as 75 to 80 percent of men with LBD experiencing REM sleep behavior disorder. Patients who exhibit such symptoms are five times more likely to suffer from LBD. In the mentioned study, researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that patients were interested in following their REM sleep disorder prognosis and wanted to learn about treatment and prevention.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is essential for brain health, as it has been linked with healthy memory and cognitive function. REM sleep disorder is a type of sleep disorder where a person experiences vivid and frequently troublesome dreams with rapid arm and leg movements. The disorder is usually gradual and may intensify with time and, because it interferes with typical REM sleep, is often linked with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s or multiple system atrophy.

To maintain healthy brain function and get more REM sleep, individuals can follow certain steps such as having a routine sleep schedule, getting more sunlight to regulate circadian rhythm, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and avoiding caffeine intake at night.
